 | High Anxiety This parody of Alfred Hitchcock's greatest hits rather sums up the strengths and weaknesses of Mel Brooks's films. By opting for the best known scenes in Spellbound, Vertigo, North by Northwest and Psycho, he settles for easy laughs and thus misses the chance to kid around with the real aficionados. Moreover, not enough thought has gone into the non-spoof scenes, many of which run out of steam, like the Freudian lecture delivered in euphemisms owing to the presence of a young child. The Sinatra pastiche is a gem and there are many funny moments, but perhaps Hitch was just too self-mocking to be spoofable. | The Wrong Man Find on BBC iplayer This murky and unpopular film in the Alfred Hitchcock canon sees the maestro of suspense opting for a grim and relentlessly stark style, almost documentary in nature, as he relates the true story of New York musician Manny Balestrero, arrested for a crime he did not commit. Henry Fonda is superbly believable in the title role, suggesting genuine puzzlement and dismay, and Vera Miles - Hitch cast her after being impressed by her performance in the Revenge episode of his TV series, Alfred Hitchcock Presents - is a revelation as the wife who can't handle the situation. Only distinguished English thespian Anthony Quayle seems out of place in a role that needed an American actor. Still, a fine and disturbing work that meant so much to Hitch he made it without salary, and does deserve to be better known. (Starring:Christopher Emmanuel "Manny" Balestrero*Henry Fonda|Rose Balestrero*Vera Miles|Frank O'Connor*Anthony Quayle|Lieutenant Bowers*Harold J Stone|Mrs Balestrero*Esther Minciotti|Detective Matthews*Charles Cooper|Gene Conforti*Nehemiah Persoff|Constance Willis*Laurinda Barrett|Betty Todd*Norma Connolly|Ann James*Doreen Lang|Mrs O'Connor*Frances Reid|Olga Conforti*Lola D'Annunzio|Gregory Balestrero*Robert Essen|Robert Balestrero*Kippy Campbell) Saturday January 9 2010 14:45 - 16:30 |
 | Jane Eyre From Tudor Rose through Back Street to Mary Poppins, British director Robert Stevenson has shown an unusual talent in his warmly sympathetic treatment of films about women. This typical 20th Century-Fox period melodrama is a fine example of his work, though many will persist in attributing the film's virtues to Orson Welles, who might have made a fine job of directing it, given the chance. Welles's Edward Rochester is suitably awesome, dominating his scenes (naturally), but, unfortunately, slowing the pace whenever he appears. Joan Fontaine, still recovering from a severe double dose of Alfred Hitchcock - Rebecca and Suspicion - is fine, though wan, in the title role. Watch for a young Elizabeth Taylor in a small but telling role early in the film. | Murder by Numbers Alfred Hitchcock explored the theme of murder as an intellectual exercise in Rope as did Richard Fleischer in Compulsion, but this attempt at the same is just plain ropey. Here, Michael Pitt and Ryan Gosling play bored teenagers who kill a defenceless woman simply to get away with it. Of course, their mistake is to underestimate unconventional homicide detective Sandra Bullock, who smells a rat and confronts a few skeletons in her own cupboard to come after them. Bullock plays the maverick detective rather well, but there's little else to get excited about in this dull and predictable thriller. (Starring:Cassie Mayweather*Sandra Bullock|Sam Kennedy*Ben Chaplin|Richard Haywood*Ryan Gosling|Justin Pendleton*Michael Pitt|Lisa Mills*Agnes Bruckner|Ray*Chris Penn|Captain Rod Cody*R D Call|Al Swanson*Tom Verica) Friday January 15 2010 23:10 - 01:25 |
