Entry for Henry Fonda
 | | Henry Jaynes Fonda (May 16, 1905 – August 12, 1982) was a highly acclaimed Academy Award-winning American film and stage actor, best known for his roles as plain-speaking idealists. Fonda's subtle, naturalistic acting style preceded by many years the popularization of method acting.
Fonda made his mark early as a Broadway actor, and made his Hollywood debut in 1935. Fonda's career gained momentum after his Academy Award-nominated performance in 1940's The Grapes of Wrath, an adaptation of John Steinbeck's novel about an Oklahoma family who moved west during the Dust Bowl. Throughout six decades in Hollywood, Fonda cultivated a strong, appealing screen image in such classics as The Ox-Bow Incident, Mister Roberts, and 12 Angry Men. Later, Fonda moved toward both more challenging, darker epics as Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in the West (as a villain who kills, among others, a child and a cripple) and lighter roles in family comedies like Yours, Mine and Ours (with Lucille Ball). Coming up on Television
 | The Wrong Man Find on BBC iplayer This murky and unpopular film in the Alfred Hitchcock canon sees the maestro of suspense opting for a grim and relentlessly stark style, almost documentary in nature, as he relates the true story of New York musician Manny Balestrero, arrested for a crime he did not commit. Henry Fonda is superbly believable in the title role, suggesting genuine puzzlement and dismay, and Vera Miles - Hitch cast her after being impressed by her performance in the Revenge episode of his TV series, Alfred Hitchcock Presents - is a revelation as the wife who can't handle the situation. Only distinguished English thespian Anthony Quayle seems out of place in a role that needed an American actor. Still, a fine and disturbing work that meant so much to Hitch he made it without salary, and does deserve to be better known. | Gunfight at the OK Corral Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday were never better portrayed on screen than here, played by movie giants Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas respectively. Both actors achieve a dignity that was rather lacking in the two outings with Kevin Costner (Wyatt Earp) and Kurt Russell (Tombstone) and only fitfully touched upon by Henry Fonda and Victor Mature in John Ford's 1946 film My Darling Clementine. The Leon Uris screenplay may veer towards the turgid in setting up the action, but once the gunplay starts the screen positively ignites - director John Sturges's shoot-out finale is a mesmerisingly fine piece of cinema, brilliantly photographed and edited. There's also a soaring, nostalgic title ballad by Frankie Laine, and a marvellously etched supporting performance from Jo Van Fleet as Holliday's woman. For once, the whole cast, notably Rhonda Fleming, John Ireland and Lee Van Cleef, look as though they were born to be in westerns. (Starring:Wyatt Earp*Burt Lancaster|John H "Doc" Holliday*Kirk Douglas|Laura Denbow*Rhonda Fleming|Kate Fisher*Jo Van Fleet|Johnny Ringo*John Ireland|Cotton Wilson*Frank Faylen|Charles Bassett*Earl Holliman|Ike Clanton*Lyle Bettger|Abel Head "Shanghai Pierce"*Ted De Corsia|Billy Clanton*Dennis Hopper|John P Clum*Whit Bissell|Morgan Earp*DeForest Kelley|Ed Bailey*Lee Van Cleef|John Shanssey*George Mathews|Bat Masterson*Kenneth Tobey) Tuesday January 12 2010 12:35 - 14:50 |
 | On Golden Pond Nominated for ten Oscars, this old-fashioned family melodrama won three - best adapted screenplay for Ernest Thompson and, more notably, Katharine Hepburn's fourth award for best actress and Henry Fonda's first as best actor. Considering neither was in the best of health, their performances are remarkable. The quiet authority of their acting is all the more apparent in their scenes with Jane Fonda, who overdoes the angst, particularly when opposite the father with whom she occasionally disagreed in real life. Complementing the subtle shades of performance are cinematographer Billy Williams's superb images, using to dramatic effect the changing light of the countryside in summer.
