Entry for Peter Butterworth

Peter Butterworth (born Bramhall, Stockport, Cheshire, 4 February 1919, died 16 January 1979) was an English comic actor who appeared in 16 Carry On films. He was married to actor Janet Brown, who presented Picture Book on BBC children's television in the 1950s before becoming an impersonator of Margaret Thatcher. Their son Tyler Butterworth is also an actor.

Butterworth served as a lieutenant in the Royal Navy during World War II. He was captured in the Netherlands in 1940. He escaped through a tunnel from Dugaluft, near Frankfurt, in June 1940 and covered 27 miles (43 km) over three days before a member of the Hitler Youth captured him. Afterwards he joked he could never work with children. Two other attempts never got beyond the camp grounds.  (Read full article from Wikipedia...)

Coming up on Television

Carry On Dick
Packed with more than the usual number of smutty innuendos, this spoof on period adventures, ranging from George Arliss in Dr Syn to the bodice-rippers starring James Mason and Margaret Lockwood, does not live up to the team's previous best. It is chiefly memorable for being Sid James's 19th and last Carry On. He plays feared highwayman Dick Turpin, who masquerades as country vicar the Reverend Flasher. Also playing a double role, Barbara Windsor gives one of her best performances of the series as Turpin's sidekick, while Jack Douglas is good value as the bungling Bow Street runner who simply hasn't a clue. (Starring:Dick Turpin / Reverend Flasher*Sidney James|Harriet / Harry*Barbara Windsor|Captain Desmond Fancey*Kenneth Williams|Martha Hoggett*Hattie Jacques|Sir Roger Daley*Bernard Bresslaw|Madame Desiree*Joan Sims|Constable*Kenneth Connor|Tom "Doc" Scholl*Peter Butterworth|Sergeant Jock Strapp*Jack Douglas)

Robin and Marian
In this gorgeous, masterly elegy for a vanished age, an older and disillusioned Robin Hood returns from the Crusades to find Sherwood empty of outlaws, Marian in a nunnery and the Sheriff of Nottingham still fiddling the books. James Goldman's script has a wonderful way with satire and myth-mongering, while Richard Lester has the sharpest eye for historical detail. Audrey Hepburn was lured out of retirement to play Marian and she is exquisite, but it's Sean Connery's gruff, greybeard performance that ennobles, rather than dominates the picture. Great support, too, from Robert Shaw's Sheriff and Ronnie Barker's perfectly judged "heavy relief" as Friar Tuck. What a pity it flopped at the box-office. (Starring:Robin Hood*Sean Connery|Maid Marian*Audrey Hepburn|Sheriff of Nottingham*Robert Shaw|King Richard*Richard Harris|Little John*Nicol Williamson|Will Scarlett*Denholm Elliott|Sir Ranulf*Kenneth Haigh|Friar Tuck*Ronnie Barker|King John*Ian Holm|Mercadier*Bill Maynard|Old defender*Esmond Knight|Sister Mary*Veronica Quilligan|Surgeon*Peter Butterworth)
