Coming up on Television
 | Once upon a Time in the Midlands Full of familiar Britpic faces and spaghetti western references, Shane Meadows's third feature opens with promise and panache. However, once petty crook Robert Carlyle arrives in Nottingham to prevent ex-wife Shirley Henderson from marrying garage boss Rhys Ifans, the Leone tone is replaced by a diluted brand of Ken Loach realism, in which quips and slapstick leaven the underlying atmosphere of aggression and despair. Consequently, the story loses momentum, minor characters are marginalised in favour of introspection and the dénouement winds up more a letdown than a showdown. Knowingly filmed and scored - and acted with aplomb - this is ultimately undone by its laudable ambition.(Starring:Jimmy*Robert Carlyle|Dek*Rhys Ifans|Carol*Kathy Burke|Shirley*Shirley Henderson|Charlie*Ricky Tomlinson|Marlene*Finn Atkins|Vanessa *Vanessa Feltz|Plonko the clown*Vic Reeves|Kung fu clown*Bob Mortimer|Bingo caller*Shane Meadows) Wednesday January 6 2010 23:15 - 01:15 |
 | Cracker Another chance to see a story from the second series of the acclaimed drama series. After a violent murder, Fitz is sure the police are on the wrong track, but he and Bilborough have yet to resolve their differences. As the police team clutch at straws, Fitz watches from the wings, unsure whether to offer his help.(Starring:Robbie Coltrane,Barbara Flynn,Christopher Eccleston,Robert Carlyle,Lorcan Cranitch,Geraldine Somerville) Sunday January 10 2010 23:00 - 00:05 |
 | Cracker Fitz and the police bury their differences in an attempt to track the killer, who has now claimed two victims. When a young female journalist becomes the next target, Fitz realises that the killer is a man with a very particular mission.(Starring:Robbie Coltrane,Robert Carlyle,Christopher Eccleston,Barbara Flynn,Lorcan Cranitch,Geraldine Somerville) Monday January 11 2010 00:05 - 01:15 |
 | Trainspotting There was no doubt after Shallow Grave that the arrival of director Danny Boyle, producer Andrew Macdonald and doctor-turned-writer John Hodge on the British film scene was a major cause for celebration. However, it was the trio's follow-up - this devastatingly comic and tragic look at youth culture and its recreational habits - that put them firmly on the international map. Unapologetic and hard-hitting, Irvine Welsh's controversial bestseller is brought to the screen as a dazzling assault on the senses. Fiercely original and provocative, this shocker focuses on the disintegrating friendship of four Edinburgh lads as they embark on an endless drugs and petty-crime bender. In a true masterstroke, the harrowing and bleak subject matter is presented as a hilariously funny walk on the wild side, with no moral stance taken or punches pulled. Ewan McGregor is absolutely brilliant as smart-aleck junkie Renton, and Robert Carlyle gives a stunning performance as the violent Begbie. This is a savagely sophisticated work and a landmark British classic. (Starring:Mark Renton*Ewan McGregor|Daniel "Spud"*Ewen Bremner|Simon "Sick Boy"*Jonny Lee Miller|Tommy*Kevin McKidd|Begbie*Robert Carlyle|Diane*Kelly Macdonald|Swanney*Peter Mullan|Mr Renton*James Cosmo|Mrs Renton*Eileen Nicholas|Allison*Susan Vidler|Lizzy*Pauline Lynch|Gail*Shirley Henderson|Mikey *Irvine Welsh|Game show host*Dale Winton|Dealer / Andreas*Keith Allen) Friday January 15 2010 23:00 - 00:50 |

In Thailand, he finds a map to a secret island beach community, where life with other like-minded travellers is seemingly blissful. But jealousy, power games and drug smugglers threaten to destroy the oasis.(Starring:Leonardo DiCaprio,Virginie Ledoyen,Guillaume Canet,Robert Carlyle,Daniel York,Tilda Swinton) Sunday January 17 2010 21:00 - 23:15 |
