 | Ocean's Eleven George Clooney and his A-list pals have fun in the Las Vegas sun in this thoroughly enjoyable caper from director Steven Soderbergh. In a loose remake of the 1960 Rat Pack venture of the same name, Clooney comfortably steps into Frank Sinatra's shoes as Danny Ocean, who is fresh out of jail but still plans to pull off an audacious heist with the help of a ten-man crew. His star cronies include Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Carl Reiner and Don Cheadle, who affects the worst cockney accent you've ever heard. The plan is to hit the vault containing the take from three of the biggest casinos in Vegas, all of which belong to Terry Benedict (Andy Garcia), the guy who just happens to be dating Ocean's ex-wife Tess (Julia Roberts). This is one of those films that's a joy from start to finish, but doesn't strain the brain for a second. Thankfully, the mechanics of the heist take second place to the glorious interplay of a stellar cast that is clearly having a ball with the sharp, quick-fire dialogue. | Ocean's Twelve Steven Soderbergh's Ocean's Eleven was a sharp, witty remake of a rather self-indulgent vehicle for Frank Sinatra's Rat Pack. With this sequel, George Clooney, Brad Pitt and company seem to have fallen into the same sort of trap. The lazy, convoluted plot has the smooth criminals hitting the robbery trail in Europe to raise the cash needed to pay back their vengeful last victim, casino boss Terry Benedict (Andy Garcia). Soderbergh gives the movie a hip surface sheen and there's no denying the chemistry between the starry ensemble cast, which this time includes Catherine Zeta-Jones, Robbie Coltrane, Eddie Izzard and Vincent Cassel. However, Bruce Willis's hopelessly contrived cameo is pretty much symptomatic of the film as a whole - a hoot for all involved but a little too knowing for its own good.(Starring:Danny Ocean*George Clooney|Rusty Ryan*Brad Pitt|Linus Caldwell*Matt Damon|Isabel Lahiri*Catherine Zeta-Jones|Terry Benedict*Andy Garcia|Basher Tarr*Don Cheadle|Frank Catton*Bernie Mac|Tess Ocean*Julia Roberts|Virgil Malloy*Casey Affleck|Turk Malloy*Scott Caan|François Toulour*Vincent Cassel|Livingston Dell*Eddie Jemison|Saul Bloom*Carl Reiner|Reuben Tishkoff*Elliott Gould|Yen*Qin Shaobo|Roman Nagel*Eddie Izzard|Matsui*Robbie Coltrane|van der Woude*Jeroen Krabbé|Basher's engineer*Jared Harris|Bruce Willis*Bruce Willis|La Marque*Albert Finney|Topher Grace*Topher Grace|Molly Star*Cherry Jones) Friday January 8 2010 23:10 - 01:35 |
 | Traffic This brilliantly realised high-tone crime drama (based on the 1989 Channel 4 ratings winner Traffik) is a textbook example of how to adapt a TV production successfully for the big screen. Filmed by Steven Soderbergh in a scintillating docudrama style, and using a broad but involving multi-strand story canvas, this powerful overview of the contemporary narcotics trade exposes the complex chain supplying North America's drug culture. Looking at the drug barons based in Tijuana, Mexico, and the addicts blighting Ohio, Soderbergh paints a sobering and compelling picture of the resources needed to keep on top of the game from both sides of the law. On the one hand, there's newly appointed drugs tsar Michael Douglas who, while trying to get a handle on the vast problem, is unaware that his teenage daughter has a serious drug habit. On the other is wealthy drug kingpin Steven Bauer whom DEA agents Don Cheadle and Luis Guzman are desperately trying to nail. Wonderfully acted by an amazing cast packed with big names in cameo roles (Dennis Quaid, James Brolin, Albert Finney, Amy Irving, Peter Riegert, Salma Hayek), the stand-out performances come from a magnetic Benicio Del Toro, playing a Mexican cop torn between morality and temptation (he received the best supporting actor Oscar for his sensitive turn), and Catherine Zeta-Jones as Bauer's shell-shocked pregnant wife who gradually realises she will have to take full control of her husband's cartel if she is to protect her own comfortable lifestyle. (Although they don't share any scenes, this is the first movie on which Douglas worked with future wife Zeta-Jones.) Striking exactly the right balance between provocative insight and slam-bang action, Traffic is an ambitiously mounted and wholly satisfying social-issue drama.(Starring:Robert Wakefield*Michael Douglas (1)|Montel Gordon*Don Cheadle|Javier Rodriquez*Benicio Del Toro|Helena Ayala*Catherine Zeta-Jones|Arnie Metzger*Dennis Quaid|Carlos Ayala*Steven Bauer|Ray Castro*Luis Guzman|Caroline Wakefield*Erika Christensen|Francisco Flores*Clifton Collins Jr|Eduardo Ruiz*Miguel Ferrer|Seth Abrahms*Topher Grace|Barbara Wakefield*Amy Irving|Jeff Sheridan*D W Moffett|Chief of Staff*Albert Finney|General Ralph Landry*James Brolin|Attorney Michael Adler*Peter Riegert) Monday January 11 2010 22:00 - 00:50 |
