In addition, we scan upcoming movie releases and TV appearances and provide sections on these too. Finally, we build connections between people via their entry in Wikipedia and every person is rated daily based on the density of news articles that are currently appearing on the web. The top rated people will appear each day in the 'In the News' section above.

Steven Spielberg's mega-upgrade of the 1953 science-fiction landmark is a spectacular disaster epic of two halves. The first (and much the superior) hour is a masterclass in escalating tension, with grandiose and brilliantly executed sequences following in rapid succession - the bizarre lightning storm that prefigures the eruption of the alien Tripod war machines from beneath the earth is an astonishing opening salvo. Unusually for a special-effects blockbuster, the human drama (though admittedly clichéd in construction) is transfixing, as divorced dock worker Tom Cruise flees the invasion with his two estranged children (played by Justin Chatwin and Dakota Fanning). It's in the second hour that the story begins to wilt, most crucially when the suspense-evaporating CGI aliens are revealed. The imaginative details (a blazing train hurtling out of control, the river of dead bodies) also begin to peter out until a rather abrupt ending in which Hollywood schmaltz wins the day. If ever a movie was ripe for sending up, then Top Gun was it, and, although this lacks the charm of classic spoofs Airplane! and The Naked Gun, there are enough good gags on show to win over those who wished Tom Cruise had gone down in flames. This time director Jim Abrahams goes solo without the Zucker brothers, but he still displays the same cheerful lack of taste and subtlety, and finds time to poke fun at movies ranging from The Fabulous Baker Boys through to Dances with Wolves. Charlie Sheen enjoys himself as the ludicrously macho fighter pilot hero, although Lloyd Bridges bags the most laughs as the altogether untogether commanding officer.
