Coming up on Television
 | Red Heat This routine fish-out-of-water thriller from director Walter Hill offered Arnold Schwarzenegger one of his more interesting action roles before he became a superstar. Playing a stony, monosyllabic Soviet cop poses no real acting problems for the big man, and in James Belushi he has an agreeably foul-mouthed foil, as the pair team up to hunt for an escaped Russian drug dealer. Hill stages a series of entertainingly violent and increasingly silly set pieces, and there's an eclectic support cast that includes Peter Boyle, Gina Gershon and Laurence Fishburne, when he was still calling himself Larry. (Starring:Captain Ivan Danko*Arnold Schwarzenegger|Det Sgt Art Ridzik*James Belushi|Lou Donnelly*Peter Boyle|Viktor Rostavili*Ed O'Ross|Lieutenant Stobbs*Larry Fishburne [Laurence Fishburne]|Catherine Manzetti*Gina Gershon|Sergeant Gallagher*Richard Bright|Salim*J W Smith|Abdul Elijah*Brent Jennings|Hooker*Gretchen Palmer|Night clerk*Pruitt Taylor Vince|Pat Nunn*Michael Hagerty [Michael G Hagerty]|Streak*Brion James) Monday January 4 2010 22:00 - 00:10 |
 | End of Days This millennium's-end action movie is a calculated but fairly enjoyable attempt to give Arnold Schwarzenegger a less indestructible, more human side, and cash in on the revitalised horror genre. While Arnie's amateurish emoting never rings true in the role of a run-down, suicidal, alcoholic ex-cop, the "Devil searching for his bride" story provides some decent popcorn entertainment. Gabriel Byrne, meanwhile, rises above the clumsily structured and wholly derivative script to give an attention-grabbing performance as a very laid-back Prince of Darkness. (The scene in which he seductively bribes Arnold with the chance of a new start is a cracker.) It should have been sharper and scarier, but the final half-hour excitingly delivers the demonic goods.(Starring:Jericho Cane*Arnold Schwarzenegger|The Man*Gabriel Byrne|Chicago*Kevin Pollak|Christine York*Robin Tunney|Detective Marge Francis*C C H Pounder|Father Kovak*Rod Steiger|Thomas Aquinas*Derrick O'Connor|Mabel*Miriam Margolyes) Tuesday January 5 2010 23:35 - 01:50 |
 | The Simpsons Movie Twenty years after their first appearance on The Tracey Ullman Show, America's favourite dysfunctional cartoon family finally makes it on to the big screen. Cheekily described by creator Matt Groening as Homer's Odyssey, this is certainly epic, with 11 writers, a team of South Korean animators and a plot that follows Homer from Springfield to Alaska and back again after he accidentally causes an environmental disaster in his home town (D'oh!). The script is glorious in its ambition, tackling everything from lowbrow slapstick to inventive visual gags (Bart's naked skateboarding is a highlight), barbed political comment (an ill-informed President Arnold Schwarzenegger declaring "I was elected to lead, not to read") and irreverent swipes at its competitors (Walt Disney gets a bashing). The rich relentlessness of the jokes demands at least two viewings and, while some fans will undoubtedly be upset that a few of their favourite characters are sidelined (including villainous Mr Burns), this re-establishes The Simpsons as the jewel in the crown of American animation. (Starring:Homer Simpson / Krusty the Clown*Dan Castellaneta|Marge Simpson*Julie Kavner|Bart Simpson*Nancy Cartwright|Lisa Simpson*Yeardley Smith|Moe / Apu / Sea Captain*Hank Azaria|Seymour Skinner / Ned Flanders /Lenny Leonard / Dr Hibbert*Harry Shearer|Fat Tony*Joe Mantegna|Russ Cargill*A Brooks [Albert Brooks]|Tom Hanks*Tom Hanks) Saturday January 9 2010 19:15 - 21:00 |

 | | Bigger, Stronger, Faster* - Trailer In America, we define ourselves in the superlative: we are the biggest, strongest, fastest country in the world. We reward speed, size and above all else: winning - at sport, at business and at war. Metaphorically we are a nation on steroids. Is it any wonder that so many of our heroes are on performance enhancing drugs? From the producers of Bowling For Columbine and Fahrenheit 9/11 comes a new film that unflinchingly explores our win-at-all-cost culture through the lens of a personal journey. Blending comedy and pathos, BIGGER, STRONGER, FASTER* is a collision of pop culture, animated sequences and first-person narrative, with a diverse cast including US Congressmen, professional athletes, medical experts and everyday gym rats. At its heart, this is the story of director Christopher Bell and his two brothers, who grew up idolizing muscular giants like Hulk Hogan, Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger, and who went on to become members of the steroid-subculture in an effort to realize their American dream. When you discover that your heroes have all broken the rules, do you follow the rules, or do you follow your heroes? Directed by: Christopher Bell Starring: |
